Today…I’m missing a very interesting Atlantan dubbed affectionately as “batton bob” who I drew in some patriotic gear several years ago. I felt as the 4th of July comes upon me in 2021, I want to reflect upon individual rights and social obligation. Batton Bob is an exceptional example of how our country protects an individual in their pursuit of happiness.
However, many Americans have become horrifically uninformed on which their freedoms rest. They believe their individual rights usurp the mass collection of individuals that create our vast union. They do not. No individual is entitled to endanger another. It’s a long standing legal precedent going back to Greek and Roman courts and standing the test of time through the dark ages to current times. Yes, at times the concept is re-tested, but never broken because it is a fundamental truth or axiom to collective living.
Without this simple clarity from where one person stops and the community starts, no society can withstand the greed, narcissism and incestuous thinking that would and does arise when the individual’s needs, desires, and actions superseded the wellbeing of the whole. It’s a self-imploding paradise.
