Recently, my days have been filled with cows. Been in Kansas and Missouri, and been with lots of livestock. Woke up to grazing cows in the pasture next door. In fact, the coffee cup I drank from had cows on them too. It was a folky illustration of the farm. Quite quaint and it got me thinking, “why the heck do people want to drink coffee from a cup with cows on it?” I guess the same reason people wanted oil paintings with cows on it too.
Of course I know the long and the short answer to my own questions (lots of social and technological reasons for why cows and other pictorial scenes adorn our walls and hence our coffee cups, but…the folky, unlearned, treatment of our country’s countryside has permeated our artistic depiction. Makes me wonder why? Or ponder the many “whys.”
I can take an educated guess at how something as pronounced as this theme arises and continues to snowball but before I do, I wanted to present two versions of my own “cow” coffee mug. Which do you prefer? Why? Does the literal “green” grass make you accept the abstract cows more? Do you find yourself wanting to see the subject (cows) in the Pink version taken even more out of time and space?
If so…you are in good company. And I think it’s from years of exposure to the trend I mentioned above and another more recent handling of our livestock. The colored/modern/repeat. It’s the only other way artists have been handling “cows” on fabric or birthday cards or various other consumer products.
It’s just a hum…..
That’s all. :)
