Hell No to Jane Crow 2.0. A Texas senate bill passes that nullifies a woman's right to her body established in Roe v. Wade. Will the Supreme Court let this legislation stand? I am reminded of a great seer of truth, Pauli Murray.
Pauli Murray was a lawyer, civil rights activist, and feminist among numerous other accolades. However, before he/she was so accomplished, Pauli had to fight discrimination. As a black and a woman by birth, Pauli recognized the parallel prejudice between being black and being female. To draw the comparison for others, he/she called the sexist repression "Jane Crow". That was 1941. Eighty years later, women’s rights are still in jeopardy.
Laws change. If women loose rights when when these laws are rewritten, women’s rights are being eroded. It could be the next day or decades later for women to experience the corrosive effects. Even if the law doesn’t personally effect you; every right women have were won, legally...in the court system. Every autonomous right any woman has, ANY WOMAN, was built one victory at a time on legal arguments defeating unjust laws. These victories created more and more legal context. Protecting a woman’s right to choose is not just about a woman terminating a pregnancy, but about a woman being the charge of her body, life, and future.
Pauli Murray's papers and writings on transgender struggles were courageous.
