The hand raised to express “stop” is the exact configuration of a hand shake. Inside this hand is the single-line drawing i did of BML protest.

Back in 2020 and in reference to the George Floyd murder, a person said to me, “protests won’t help.” I was shocked. Did this person not know American history? Most social change in our country only comes due to protests.

Then again, he was white, and male, and straight, and Christian; nor was he impaired physically or mentally. Being all of the aforementioned, he probably hadn’t gained or lost any rights due to protests. The last time a large majority of physically and mentally capable, straight, Christian, white males engaged in protest was labor rights from the 1840’s to the early 1900’s, which caused the formation of unions. It’s human to listen and learn when you are personally affected.

Two years after the aforementioned conversation, two unprecendented convictions are positive change for black males within the institutionalized American system. If the protests has not continued, the stories of black men and women suffering and dying from racial injustice would not have been heard.
