In the new age of social media…silence can be a loud voice of affirmation or concent. I make use of this idiom born from an early media to create a juxtaposition. As our medias change, so must our roles as an audience. In movies and television directors employed the sounds of crickets cheeping to accentuate absences of other noise. This storytelling shorthand became common practice in the industry. This technique was used so readily that crickets became synonymous to silence. Eventually, even our conversations began to mimic the media.

When radio and television entered our homes, the masses were expected to watch. Participation wasn’t an option. People took the information they learned and discussed these considerations with friends and family separately.

Our roles of responsibility to the system has changed. It is no longer acceptable to remain a silent observer in wake of social media obvious effects on our culture. It is one thing not to like or heart someone’s obligatory photo, but when opinions and beliefs are being promoted it behooves us all to responsibly share our thoughts on matters that concern our social and cultural fabric. 

The "right to remain silent" is for those who might perjure themselves when being convicted of a crime. When you are a citizen of a community, city, state, and country which is self-ruled, it is your obligation to voice your opinion so that the collective body can evaluate and contemplate it's own governance. Without our voices, how are we to reflect our beliefs in our laws? Remaining silent and letting others carrying on the conversation without the weight of your opinion, deflects the responsibility you have to others because you enjoy all the benefits of a collection of
