This is a Nashville sign "Big Time Boots" that I altered to reflect one of my own body positive battles with my big toe. Being a Gen X'er meant we were the first generation of girls being told we could do anything. Unfortunately, we were still in high heels trying. Being released from the bondage of sexual superiority didn't free us from feminine inadequacy. So, an innocent comment like "hey you have a really BIG big toe,” at swim team practice could have lasting effects. In fact, I was so ashamed of my enormous toe...I wore closed toes shoes until I was in my mid twenties. The sign is an unabashed, in neon, declaration on my toe.

However, the needle has moved and in Nashville i witnessed what that looks like.

Nashville’s Broadway was busting at the seams this past Friday night. The women who were there were mainly under the age of thirty-five. I have to take my pink hat off to these girls for they were all sizes and all dressed to kill. It didn’t matter if their body was a 12 or an 8, they were wearing tight jeans, cropped tops, and low cut tops. For certain this does not mean this generation is truly free to love themselves as equally as a more perfect body, but is shows that social change can and does occur.
