My father was in the military. “Up and at ‘em,” was how most often I was roused to wake in the morning. One eye open, I would stare at my father usually already clean shaven and in his suit ready for the work day. “Get up, Jen Jen time’s a wasting. By now...my second eye was fluttering open. If I had one ounce of courage I might wiggle further under the sheets or flip-flop to my other side and whaling playfully that I was most certainly sick and should stay home indefinitely. Atlas my father would bludgeon me with the old “early bird gets the worm” nonsense. I moaned as I got up, cursed the sun, had evil pinging thoughts about the fool who invented waking up before you...woke up! Today, as an adult, I scoff at sleep shame. Sleep is an incredible time where my little soul squirrels away all my wonderful knowledge. I’m comforted by the fact that no time is wasted asleep because I’m doing important work already. So, sleep. It’s good for you. When you wake naturally, that’s when you can get all that other stuff done. None, most certainly, as important as what your body and mind do during the night.
